In November 2020 I had a transformational psychic medium reading with Mary Grisey (@marygrisey) that cracked open my heart to my healing journey and led me to the path of motherhood. Although there were many profound messages that came through this reading, it was toward the very end when Mary said to me:
“You didn’t mention that you want to become a mother?” and I was stopped in my tracks.
Up until that moment, I had never openly talked about my dream of someday becoming a mother.
This dream was something I kept to myself because, well, I was scared.
I was in the middle of reuniting with both of my biological families, unpacking my adoption, and I had a lot of mixed feelings about myself. I was learning more about myself and my history every single day, while also feeling like I didn’t know myself at all. I was listening to family stories about separation, loss, and other adoptions in the family, as well as stories about addiction, scarcity, and trauma of all kinds. These stories that had always been stored in my bones were finally coming to light. And the weight of it all was sometimes unbearable.
But something happened to me that day…
During that reading, I was affirmed by my ancestors that, yes, someday (sooner than later) I would become a mother and that this baby was going to be powerful. So even though I was at one of my lowest points, I was being told that I would have the responsibility of raising up the next generation, and the light inside me turned on.
From that very moment on, I was charged with a calling to heal.
Heal for myself.
Heal for my ancestors.
Heal for my families.
And, most of all…
Heal for my child.
Throughout the following year, I experienced a lot of shifts—I earned my doctoral degree in music, I moved home to the Midwest, I started my online business, I married my best friend, and I reunited with my biological Dad and siblings in Hawai’i for the first time.
My life was a whirlwind, but there was this tiny voice inside of me that remained steady and true.
So one day, I asked this tiny voice, “What is your name?”
And they responded…
“Selah.”
By November 2021, I had a feeling my husband and I were going to try to conceive in the new year, so I reached out to
—the most radical, spiritual, ancestrally-led birth doula I knew. And in our first call, I timidly shared my story (a little worried they might think I had gone off the deep end) and asked if they would be my virtual birth doula through conscious conception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.Luckily, Siobhan was open to the request and method began to reveal itself.
Over the next 18 months, Siobhan and I channeled and co-created
—an approach to birth that supported my growing relationships with my intuition, body wisdom, voice, ancestors, spirit guides, and most importantly, my spirit baby who guided me to plan the birth of my dreams, Selah Marlene Calpito Spurling. Each journey to
included reiki and guided trance journeys, along with voice alchemy and journaling, which helped me work through my personal birth story and the stories that I held in my womb from my mothers and grandmothers. Between sessions, I began asking my families questions about their births, childhoods, and relationships with their mothers. Eventually, the fear that had kept me silent and frozen about my desire to be a mother dissipated with every session. I felt loved, supported, and clear in my vision for my birth and the life I wanted to provide for my child—a liberated, creative, and expansive life.If you are currently experiencing pregnancy, I invite you to journey with us to .
